Some thoughts to toss out tonight....the Law of unintended consequences.
I have listened to some of the best, and most informed, developers and users of AI: as they search for the Super-intelligent to arise from the mix.
They really have no choice (in my opinion) to not go full steam ahead with no guard rails, safety nets , or oversight.
Why?
That part , I think, is simple. Whoever gets their first will literally own the World. Sure some nasty bad things might happen first, but when the dust settles, the folks who own that AI, will own everything. And they darn sure won't make it easy for anyone to climb that ladder and share.
And that leads me to some thoughts of my own about the future. I am an old man, so my future is usually just tomorrow. And it is a relatively simple future: roof over my head, food on the table, kids and grandkids healthy and growing, and no pain or ailments. If those are all true...I had a great day. Tomorrow is far in the future.
But I think , if it wasn't for all the bad crap that will inevitably happen, I would like to be alive to see what the year 2035 is like. Yes, that soon. Maybe, even sooner. Once the SuperAI takes over, all research and progress based on Human life spans and experience...well, it is out the window. And yes I think Humanity will be gone, and a new species ...some sort of hybrid human/AI cyborg will be the new rulers. Just a thought.
I also think that any sort of Democracy...or Republic, or literally any form of individual Government...will be toast. The AI will care not one whit about borders, tradition, race, nations, etc...those are Human Constructs...and The AI will sort those things out rather quickly.
I think, once the dust settles, food, health care, income equality, will all be set by the AI. Much more efficient, and much more logic based. I don't think you will be able to generate petty vindictive sociopathic narcissistic power brokers in AI Land. But there is always the chance that the AI might think it is easier to just get rid of us...not for any emotional reason, but just because we screw up so many things...including caring for one another.
Those few Corporations that get to that "Next Generation" Super AI, will become the wealthiest to ever exist. And they will be a true "One World Government." For they will think of the entire planet as just a spaceship going through space. And it will decide resource allocation for the trip.
So, for me, I kinda want to see that future, for I can't even imagine what it would be like to live in a world so wealthy, so rich, so organized, that you , and only you decide how to live your life and give it meaning. Everything will be at your disposal ...including time. So are you just going to party till you die? Or get really really good at something that juices you. It will be up to you.
And that's my guess.

Maybe that'll be the case. Maybe not. Several stories in the form both of books and movies --TV shows as well -- have plenty of warnings about what happens, when we spend so much time and focus, on figuring out whether or not we could that we we completely overlook whether or not we should. AI does have one weakness that no one seems to talk about:
It has an "off" switch somewhere. Whoever has access to that switch is the one who would have immediate access to that hypothetical power. AI, like any of our devices, runs on electricity. A well-timed burp from the Sun, or perhaps a sudden arrival of electromagnetic waves, can easily put AI as well as anything else that runs on electricity to immediate death. Granted, either of those situations is a whole other can of problems that we're not emotionally or mentally ready to deal with.
Either way though your conclusion brings up a rhetoric I've seen before; when my great-grandfather wrote about the facts of life as they were in 1798, and how would life likely be if and when our population as a worldly whole reaches fifty billion.

Good Points Sarge. I remember watching Johnny Carson interview a 100 year old farmer from Iowa. Johnny asked his guest: "What is the biggest advancement in your lifetime?"
He said: "Electricity."
Sadly tho, there is no "off switch" for AI, unless we do get that EMP that closes down everything. AI has already packed Trojan horse copies of itself in place we don't know about...or so the experts says. And as always when guessing about the future...nobody really knows.

Oh yeah...but that was a Department of Defense computer that becomes a Tyrant ...if I remember correctly. So we had the AI act just like us...and maybe...it will.
