I see a lot of this as an ideological stance.
Whose job is it to provide medical supplies?
Normally, individual facilities and HMOs forecast and order supplies like any business does, with a buffer in case there is a run on something. Many supplies you can't just stockpile, because they expire, need maintenance, etc.
That gets turned on its ear when the whole world decides it needs lots of certain items and one of the principal suppliers decides to hoover up all of those supplies.
So now you're reactive. What do you do?
In Trump's case, he encouraged (but resisted ordering them to) private businesses to ramp up production and fill the void. America has a fine tradition of rising to this kind of challenge, and this time is no different.

Man.... It would be really cool if we could get some actual science articles to discuss instead of posting nonstop political stuff, which then gets tagged as science.
