Im a Newly promoted E5. When I was a Corporal, I use to live by myself, until they put a SPC on the spare room. Our barracks consists of 2 separate rooms.
Couple of days when the SPC moved in, I picked up E5. And now housing wants me to move out of my room. I've been in my room for 2 years, all settled in. The  SPC just PCS'd from Korea and not even settled in yet because he's still waiting for his unaccompanied stuffs. I told the barracks NCO that is in charge of the this Single Soldiers Barracks that, It maybe better if the SPC move out the fact that he doesn't have his stuffs yet from Korea, and told them that they could put him in another room with a fellow SPC because that room is empty anyways. But this NCO Still wants me to move out instead of my roommate, the reason being we don't have enough rooms for SPC and below. And we don't have a NCO barracks as well. NCO's share rooms here. So now, I don't have a choice but to move in in another room with another E5.

It happens... I hated barracks life too... The barracks have caused far more marriages than love ever has =)

I totally Agree, Sarge. I see tons of Soldiers getting married just to get out of the B's Life! lol

I think having barracks is just another way the military control there members.  It is less expensive for the military  to keep the barracks staffed than to fork out BAH so you can have a life.  It's hard to have a life when everyone knows your business.

On the downside, how can we expect 17-19 year old kids to act like adults if we prevents them from having to deal with real grown up issues, like rent, bills, landlords, leases etc...?

We just extend their childhoods by catering to them..

it isnt catering to them, and saying that we are extending their childhood is insane, then by all means, let them run free and when they begin to act worse than they do in the barracks, you fix it. You know how you get them to act like adults, you make them follow the simple rules that they volunteered to follow, show up on time, be in the right uniform, its pretty simple actually, if they cant do simple petty bullshit, why or how do you expect them to do anything that has REAL consequences such as, rent an apt, smh, whatever.

Ladies and Gentlemen - their is a reason they call it "service." There is a reason people say "You've earned it," when you finally get to retirement.  If the government saved money by making me live on the aircraft carrier while we were in port or by putting me in the barracks - well then I'll just call that part of the service, be thankful I wasn't in the desert in a tent getting shot at, and smile.

The response was not directed towards Seaman's or any one not rated it was toward those individuals whom are rated and still living in barracks.  This whole conversation was about an E-5 who is not married and sharing his quarters with another E-5!!  Before making accusations read the post!!!

SGT Gumiran, Who is ultimately in charge, of the barracks rooms, that NCO or housing?  Either way, I think you should go talk to the manager at housing and voice  your opinion.  Find out if this is by regulation or some civilian calling the shots.

Share a common area. Im not compiling regarding the fact that I'm moving in with another NCO. The issue that got me heated was the NCO who is in charge of the single soldiers barracks doesn't know how to use common sense in the sense that, "who would be easier to move? Me thats been in my room for 2 years or the new Soldier that PCSd from korea that doesn't have his belonging yet?" And new soldier is in my Platoon now.

I'm sure somewhere there's a big list of room numbers and the ranks they have associated with them.  when you were promoted, it was decided you no longer met the criteria set for that room. While the standard of room is probably the same from your perspective, the quota of rooms available needs to be maintained.

SFC (Join to see) you hit the nail on the head. I understand how something can be an inconvenience but people fail to see the bigger picture. I was a barracks manager once. I was projecting rooms out months in advance of Soldiers coming and going. If I didn't a random Soldier would show up that no one knew was coming and have no room. I had to be prepared for that. Sometimes one Soldier would be inconvenienced for the greater good of an entire building full of Soldiers. It sucks but most of the time it is not about YOU it is about US.

SSG (ret) William Martin - let's just say if you in fort hood, there's chances you as a e5 will be sharing the same room (not just common area) with a e4 and below. Because HRC is sending people to the unit without making any sense, and the unit will not give out CNA for NCO to live outside of the barracks. :)
