I deal with cadets a lot, and they insist they out "rank" every NCO in the army. My usual response is somewhere around the guides of "uh-huh." Can I get some clarity of this?

Yes, but...
(always a good start to a story)

If you want to have a good time, grab you some popcorn, have a seat, and watch what happens when a know-it-all cadet tries to tell a battle-hardened Infantry Platoon Sergeant what's-what. Having watched that show before, I can tell you, that's some good entertainment!

LCpl Sidney Green - LCpl Green, it's not that the AF is more casual then the other services, I think we are just more people orientated. A lot of money and time is put into training new people, and if the supervisors and commanders take a little more time in trying to help their people the fewer would get into real trouble or worse kicked out of the service. As a First Sergeant, my job was not only see that those in my unit were doing their jobs, but train and be there for them if they had problems. Just sitting down and listening to their problems sometimes went a long way. What made my day was when I would receive a phone call from a parent thanking me for being there for there son/daughter who was away from home for the first time. A good First Sergeant is not only the enforcer of rules and regulations, but they have to also be a good counselor. One who both communicates but also listens to the other person. Since we are not God we don't always have the right answer so we should know where to send them to receive the help they may need.

Cadets and midshipmen have no rank outside of the academy- no salute from non-comms until the are officially commissioned-

I'd love to see one try pulling rank on a CSM. The show would be well worth the price of admission.

SGT (Join to see) See AR 600-20 table 1-1
You will find Academy Cadets and Senior ROTC cadets are in precedence between Warrant officers and NCO.
Generally a Senior ROTC cadet is a 3rd or 4th year scholarship contracted cadet.
So a 1st and 2nd year non contracted cadets have no rank as it applies to service members.

Though in the Cadet command and working with them, we commonly referred to all cadets as "sir" or "Ma'am" Or "Cadet Name"

I understand but disagree with "cadidiots"
What I'm saying is yes some are argent, rude, and think they know more, but as NCO's and other Officers are suppose to guide them into understanding there place and responsibility to the service they are serving. They dont get and if we mistreat and not teach they will go on and put other Service Members in danger because they have a grudge against NCO's. Teach and do what a Good NCO or Officer would do Praise in Public, Correct in Private

SSG David Brandgard - Correct. The answer is NO a Big NO. If you are not Commissioned, you are Not Commissioned. Look at the chart. Do you see Cadet on there anywhere? So many wannabes everywhere! If you earned your stripes GOOD, If you earned your Warrant or Commissioned Rank- Good. Cadets haven't earned a thing other than admission to the program. Maj-G

Cadets are cadets, learning the roles of NCOs and Officers, their rank is school only!
