How does airborne affect your MOS or career? Will going airborne somehow affect the kind of work I do as a 25P?

I am currently in AIT, and our MOS has received a major overhaul on the training side of things. Because apparently the training was severely outdated. From what I've been told a 25P works on networking, being airborne would change that? would it add to it? would it just be the same? would I deploy more or less? So many questions, a positive attitude for a newbie like me would be appreciated.

1. Is it in your enlistment package. 2. Is that MOS found in Abn units, 82nd,XVIII ABC, etc. 3. I spent my entire career airborne, and it was great. It is a completely different mind set, and not for everybody. It is demanding and our favorite saying " Join the Airborne, travel to exotic lands, meeting exciting people and kill them."

First of all do you even have it in your contract? In my day requesting Airborne school by people not in Airborne units was very difficult to get -even for NCOs that have been in for several years. Graduating Airborne school will add a ASI (additional skill identifier) to your MOS, making you eligible for Airborne units (it's not a requirement tho). Career-wise this opens up doors to other types of units, meaning different types of responsibilities or opportunities for your MOS. Being in a Airborne unit comes with higher standards and a different mindset. It's that experience that makes you stand out, not your jump wings. Otherwise you'll just be a 5 jump chump in a leg unit doing some kind of tech stuff. Also, 25P sounds like a obscure MOS that may not deploy as much as everyone else -even with jump wings. Before you go chasing rainbows, sit down and really think about what you want. It sounds like you want to reclass to another MOS, which at this point may be too late.

If you can get to Airborne school or the lesser air-assault (cough/ spit), and to agree with SPC Shawn P. above, and you go to a non-status unit Not only will you stand out but in a couple of years when you are going to the Promo Board those few points may get you promoted over your peers. All educations is good both Military and Civil. Always look at how to perform two ranks above where you are at, as standing in front of the Pro Board is not the time to be thinking what it takes to make the next rank.
Look up DA 3355 Promotion work sheet and you will know and track where you are standing in the SGT ranking.

One more thing young PVT Felix, when you get to your perm party, get signed up for Correspondence courses, that they will help break up the boredom when the money and beer runs out.

Usually they won't send you on a vacation to JS to keep you a 5 jump chump. They want their money's worth and will send you to a unit that jumps, a lot. With that, sooner or later, that MOS with the P on the back will suddenly vanish and you will now be full blown grunt with wings. The way it was, anyway, things could have changed like everything. Airborne is it's own thing, you either are or are not. Airborne is a good thing, not is not a good thing.

Joe, as one commenter to this thread posted, the Army needs good communicators and it's not only in 25Ps.
Being Airborne qualified while stationed at Fort Bragg in the elite Special Security Group I was called upon to form an Airborne (D) package in 1976 with the 82nd to render support in Special Security matters at HQ level. My MOSs were 72E (Telecommunications Supervisor) and 31Z (Area Communications Chief).
Never sell yourself short in whatever and however you may serve.
