More: "Out of the mouth of babes:"
"Mommy said you had more people in your Class than we have in three grades."
They were on FaceTime with me (I am still contagious) and since they just started back to school, Class size came up. Turns out my granddaughter has 16 People in her Class. My grandson has 15.
My Eighth Grade Class had 58, and that was only half the Class, the other half (where my best friend Eddie was in it) had 59. So there were 117 Eight Graders.
They were shocked. They weren't sure if their whole School had 120 kids.
So I showed them the picture I posted with this post.
The Uniforms threw them off.
"Who wears Uniforms to School?"
"Catholics."
"Oh, so that's how they told you apart."
I rolled.
Then they asked how many I could name. Almost all of them. Just not their last names. Then this remark
"How come the girl skirts are so long?"
I rolled again.
Little did they know a few years later and those same girls would be wearing skirts so short you could see their next child. I didn't say that out loud.
Then they looked at the picture again.
"Hey, how come everyone is White?"
"Black or Brown Kids were not allowed to go to School with White kids."
They stared at me.
Then this comment:
"You went to School before the Civil War?"
As Ricky Ricardo famously said: "Lucy, you got some 'splainin to do."
And when I told them my Sister Kay, was one of the first women in Ohio to get a Loan without a male co-signer...they freaked out.
"What year was that? Like 1880...right?"
"Er...ah...no. It was 1974 when the Law was passed, and it took about a decade before it was enforced enough to actually let women use it."
"Pop Pop, you grew up in another Century."
Yes, actually ....I did.

So much of the blessing of children is missed while raising one's own, it seems.
Grandparenting is a chance to not miss it entirely and the kids never forget times with G'ma & G'pa, and what they learn from them!

My grands are mostly grown but the littlest one is still in elementary school and we have those sorts of discussions...There were 65 students in her sister's HS graduating class...we had 1200 in mine! I am not sure they have that many high school students in the entire county!

LOl. That little chat made me realize how truly different life is now. And it hammered home just how much History I witnessed. They need different skills to navigate the world that exists now. But I sure had a lot to ponder when FaceTime ended. And we are all meeting for donuts on Thursday when I am off isolation.
