Mwd
Do you know of any MWD stories? MWDs have played a part in our combat roles as veterans for decades. They save lives and are a force multiplier. Do you know of any good stories? Please share if you do, thanks.

A Working Dog Poem
GOD SUMMONED A BEAST FROM THE FIELD

And He said, Behold man, created in My image. Therefore, adore him.
You shall protect him in the wilderness, shepherd his flocks,
watch over his children, accompany him wherever he may go;
even unto civilization.

You shall be his companion, his ally, his slave. To do these things,
God said, I endow you with these instincts uncommon
to other beasts: faithfulness, devotion, and understanding,
surpassing those of man himself.

Lest it impair your courage, you shall never foresee your death.
Lest it impair your loyalty, you shall be blind to faults of man.
Lest it impair your understanding, you are denied the power of words.

Let no fault of language cleave an accord beyond that of man with
any other beast; or even man with man. Speak to your master only
with your mind and through your honest eyes.

Walk by his side; sleep in his doorway.
Forage for him; ward off his enemies; carry his burdens; share his afflictions;
love him and comfort him.

And in return for this, man will fulfill your needs and wants --
which shall be only food, shelter and affection.

So be silent, and be a friend to man. Guide him through the perils
along the way to the land that I have promised him.

This shall be your destiny and your immortality.

So spoke the Lord. And the dog heard and was content.

Dallas
Yes.... In 1982... I responded to a fight at the Fort Wainwright NCO club (pretty common call) to back up the patrols responding. But, I arrived first. When I get there is a fight ongoing in the parking lot. I open the van door, start to step out, but hesitate to ensure I call the MP Desk and tell them I am there. While I am on the Radio I my crazy MWD (Dallas the Wonder Dog) scoots behind me, and takes off from the vehicle at super speed toward the fight... I think "Oh Shit!" .... I am screwed, my MWD is loose at a fight... I am so screwed. He is too far away to respond to voice commands, so I drop the mic and take off at my fastest run (which is pretty slow when compared to a dog who thinks they get to bite something). By the time I get there, Dallas is barking, howling, growling, and running around the two dudes fighting (like a herding dog) and they are just standing there motionless/frozen. He didn't bite either... So, I grab the leash, and just then the rest of the patrols come screaming into the parking lot. I couldn't have planned it better...

I have many stories about that dog.

Awesome! Thanks COL Charles Williams for sharing, sir. I just find that MWDs are so awesome and that they don't get enough credit for what they brough (and still bring) to the game. Thanks for sharing, sir.

Jim

My dogs have kept me from harm many times...as have many dogs kept many a Soldier from certain harm. May the ones before us rest in peace, and may the ones who serve today, be honored for what they do...and bring to the fight!

For those interested, the picture is of Cpl. Bryan Manthey, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, and his MWD, Zzisko. They were resting during a patrol near Garmsir, Afghanistan, where they were searching for IEDs.
