Dune is an extraordinarily complex saga. Multiple books spanning decades...including writer's family having to craft finale after his death. Movie and TV translations have been difficult. 1980s film is still considered a historical box office bomb. 2000s miniseries is largely overlooked.

Agreed. However, this current version looks to follow closely and was actually easier to follow. I thought the Dune of the 80's was comical, this one is much more nuanced and has likeable characters, as well as characters that are meant to be unliked, and are. I'm looking forward to Dune II this week.

Dune I is on TBS or TNT, one of those two now. I would record it then fast forward through the commercials; up to 6 minutes of toilet paper and antacid commercials really does interrupt the flow of the movie. It's an enjoyable fantasy film, keep in mind it's just that, not a commentary. I suspect someone could start out on Dune II, but there would be things happening that don't make sense, just as if someone started on Return of the Jedi before seeing a previous Star Wars.
