Lt Col Charlie Brown Good qualities to begin the process,Ma'am,but just these four do not a leader make.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - Yes,Ma'am,it would take at least a short book to put forth most the qualities of real leadership, instead of just one situational scenario.

I love essays on leadership written by people who wouldn't recognize a leader if one punched them in the face. Why then is the military so successful at "growing" leaders. Simply because the military operates in a cauldron wherein leaders either emerge or they don't. Pinning rank on someone only escalates their immersion into that cauldron. However, if they fail, others will emerge. Can we identify the skills or qualities of a leader? Likely not. There are so many different styles of leaders, so many who have succeeded who looked nothing like other successful leaders while others who looked like successful leaders failed. Then there are those who succeed and then fail or fail and then succeed. Now, find me someone to write an essay on that...

Leadership is also situational...what works in one doesn't necessarily work in another...

CPT Jack Durish That's a pretty good, but short essay in itself,Cpt. Jack.
I make the distinction of "Leader" and "Commander" when discussing true leadership and like you,i believe there are so many styles that work in certain situations and not in others. Not going to elaborate farther.

SSgt Terry P. In my civilian life I've found it necessary to point out the differences between leaders and administrators more than once, lol.

Good article, Charlie. All areas that the military stresses in their leaders.
