<div>If the DoD offers a severance due to a service connected injury do you take the severance or try and wait to finish out for retirement? Is it different between Active Duty and Reserve Component? Does the DoD percentage change what the severance is?<br></div>Soldier with over 15 years of service deciding whether to take the severance or try for the medical retirement or normal retirement. Soldier will not collect retirement until age 60 due to Reserve Component.

SSG (Join to see) SSG, the MEB / PEB process is frustrating and takes many turns whether AD or RC. The evaluation begins with either a command referral or a medical condition identified as being unfitting for continued military service. Normally, a severance is for disabilities rated less than 30% and a medical retirement comes at 30% and above. If possible, and your are close to the 30% threshold, I would appeal and request a formal PEB. Your years of service, grade / rank at retirement, and percentage of disability are the three main contributing factors to determining your retirement income. If Reserve and medically retired you begin drawing your retirement pay immediately. Don't forget in the RC you are authorized to have your retirement age for pay date shortened for every 6 months you were deployed. Good luck!

If you're undergoing a PEB/MEB because of a service connected injury and they found you unfit, I don't think you have a choice, exactly. If they're offering you a severance without medically retiring you, the best you can do is appeal the decision with supporting documents. Either type of retirement is going to be the most beneficial because you'll receive all the benefits of the blue ID Card.
If they're offering you the severance but you feel you can/should be medically retired, I say appeal and fight for that.
I don't know if you're going through all of this right now or if someone else is. But I can try to answer any questions you may have on the process. I went through a MEB and the Army decided to medically retire me. I can see how I can help, if at all.
