Today, the wall has become a destination for visitors to Washington D.C., even those who did not experience the war firsthand. People with friends or relatives who fought in the war search for their names and rub impressions of them onto paper. Offerings like letters, medals, photos and dog tags are left almost daily.

In 1999, Congress expanded its definition of both the length of the war and the areas it covered. As a result, the Department of Defense regularly learns of more service members who died during combat or whose service records have been re-evaluated and adds their names.

In 2010, a study even found that visiting the wall multiple times can help Vietnam veterans better cope with post-traumatic stress.

Now a world-respected artist and architect, Lin continues to design iconic structures like the Civil Rights Memorial, a fountain and sculpture in Montgomery, Alabama that is inscribed with the names of activists who died during the Civil Rights Movement. A member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. But her most lasting legacy will likely be the wall she designed as a 21-year-old student—and how it honors the veterans it was meant to commemorate.

I am a Vietnam era veteran that did not serve in Vietnam, but both brothers did and fortunately made it home. I also had a cousin that served in Vietnam , but sadly he didn’t come home.
His name was Pvt. Norman Renfro .
Whenever we we take a trip to D.C. we always make it a priority to visit the “Wall” to pay tribute to my cousin and all the other brave heroes whose names are adorned into this magnificent Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
I always offer up a misty eyed salute to their memories and give thanks to them . They made the Ultimate Sacrifice for us all and deserve nothing less than the utmost respect.
I’ve often thought myself fo be a rough and tough ornery old fart, but that all changes rather quickly as we approach the Memorial.
For me, there always seems to be a mystical and sometimes overwhelming feeling that comes over me when my wife and I visit the Memorial.
It’s a very solemn site and a must visit for any individual or family that may journey to the D.C. area.

Lots of controversy over that decision but when you go there you know it was the right one.

So much controversy when it was selected but it truly has connected with veterans and family members as well as becoming a huge tourist attraction

I agree! It is a beautiful monument. Who has not looked for a loved one, friend, or comrade and traced the name? I knew it was controversial, and they added the statues, but the Wall is still the greatest memorial of the Vietnam War. Lt Col Charlie Brown
