For me it would be the Creator of the Declaration of Independence, Developer of the Bill or Rights, 2 time Governor of Virginia, Ambassador to France, Designer of the University of Virginia, Farmer, and President, Thomas Jefferson

1st George Washington's insistence on leaving office after 2 terms and a peaceful election of his successor were unusual at the time, the checks and balances groundwork laid at that time still influences our nation,
2nd Abraham Lincoln stand for unity of the nation despite a bloody cost and the freedom of all American citizens, and
3rd Monroe - the Monroe Doctrine still influences our interaction with central and south America

CW3 (Join to see), I think you are referring to President George Washington when you state "his ability to stick with the founding principles he helped create and leave office is a sign of just how great he was."

LTC Stephen F. that is correct, I was referring to George Washington. He set a tone at the time he left office that the country and position was much more important than anyone person.

Totally agree with your first choice; George Washington. The expectation of the time was that which ever General won the war would become the King. Washington astonished the world, and King George of England, by surrounding his commission to the Continental Congress, after the Treaty of Paris and returning to Mount Vernon to resume his private life. Several years later our new country was suffering through severe problems, which resulted in Constitutional Convention. When George Washington was elected the first President under the new Constitution many people in the United States and Europe assumed that President was just a new term for King. The common assumption was that Washington would serve as President until his death. So George Washington once again astonished the world when left office and returned to his private life after two terms as President.

I thought the same thing... Until I learned about his thuggery with the SCOTUS when trying to defend key parts of the New Deal.

FDR was one of the worst presidents we've ever had. Making a recession become the Great Depression took effort which he most definitely did. He ignored the Constitution and ran the country virtually as a kingdom, his attempted court packing was just one of the more overt things he did.

Ouch! Worst president? I think you need to go back to the kitchen and get that depression receipe and re-read it. Then look at everything people wanted to do to "fix" it and compare it to how it actually got fixed. Prior to WW2, few of his party and NONE of the republicans - wanted to get involved in WW2. Had we not joined/entered the war, we'd have gone in to another depression.

I think Washington had the greatest impact. He played a key role not only as a statesman but also a warrior, and helped to solidify our country's place in the world. Being the first at something is always the most difficult, and he not only held the office of the President of the United States as a selfless servant leader but he kept our country together at a critical time in history before a sense of loyalty to our nation was fully engrained in the citizens.
