Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 7331 Close Up." NGC 7331 (also known as Caldwell 30) is an unbarred spiral galaxy about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. It is one of the brightest objects not included in Charles Messier's 1774 Catalog of Nebulae and Star Clusters. William Herschel discovered NGC 7331 in 1784.
The term "unbarred spiral galaxy" is from a classification scheme for galaxies invented by Edwin Hubble in 1926. A spiral galaxy consists of a flattened disk, with stars forming a (usually two-armed) spiral structure, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge. Roughly half of all spirals are also observed to have a bar-like structure, with the bar extending from the central bulge, and the arms begin at the ends of the bar. NGC 7331 does not exhibit this bar-like feature. In this Hubble Space Telescope close-up, the galaxy's spiral arms feature dark obscuring dust lanes, bright bluish clusters of massive young stars, and the telltale reddish glow of active star forming regions. The bright yellowish central regions harbor populations of older, cooler stars.

Beautiful. Ever since I was young, I have always thought barred galaxies looked kind of dumb, so of course it turns out our Milky Way is a barred galaxy. Oh, well.
