These days it seems its become Good morning/afternoon/evening with unit relevant phrases interjected. I was wondering if there was a greater significance to it when it was coined. Like maybe a greeting that was given out by commanders to root out spies if they didn't return it properly or something in revolutionary/civil wars etc. Anyone have an answer?

No problem, I'm hoping it was something George Washington came up with to smoke out red coat spies, but I'm afraid it'll be something more boring.
