Trying to get assignment changed from Korea to anything stateside

I have a question if anyone could help me out, I am currently attending reclass school for 15G, I am on assignment for Korea in AUG, I recently became divorced and am now a single parent as I was awarded full custody. Do I need to wait until I graduate in a few weeks to call my branch manager and see if he can get me a stateside assignment?

SGM Quick brought up a very valid question, were you awarded custody? You may need to have a family care plan. Additionally, Korea is an assignment location where you can request command sponsorship and may be able to take your child with you.
Again, as SGM Quick pointed out, you need to engage the career counselor first due to this being an assignment based upon reclassification. Your branch manager only handles assignments for normal rotations.
And don't wait, get the ball rolling now. Being on assignment is the same as being on orders. Whether or not the orders are published means nothing other than you are closer to your report date, which does make things more difficult to correct. Time is of the essence, get the right people involved early. Keep us posted if you need more assistance.

No, your retention NCO is usually someone in your unit that has the additional duty as Retention. A Career Counselor is an actual 79S or 79R series (like a recruiter that works with active duty). Your retention NCO will report to the Career Counselor, so start there anyways.

Whatever you do, because this was a reclassification, you'll NEED to talk with your servicing Career Counselor. If you don't go through your Career Counselor, you won't get the assistance you're looking for.

Also, when you say "its bad enough ive gone 5 months without my son, but now the army wants me to go without him another 12 months...." you're trying to place blame on the Army for voluntary decisions you (reclassification) and your spouse (divorce/giving up custody) made.

And to caveat on that, Korea does allow command sponsorship of dependents, so don't have to be separated from your child. You just have to ask the right question to the right person to get the right answer.

I agree SGM, I made the choices for my career change and should take responsibility for them. Yes I was awarded full custody as well.. Thank you for the advice and information.

If you are a single parent (sole custody), you'll need to get your Family Care Plan approved by your company commander within 30 days or could face separation.

I would call your branch manager, but at the same time be prepared in case they say no, because you are also supposed to have a family care plan for reasons like this and deployments.
