HRC denied me saying that I'm asking for two incentives; abn school and reclass. My buddy knows someone he reclassed from artillery not being abn qualified prior. They sent him to ABN school then to Rigger AIT. HRC is advising me to re enlist with ABN school and after being at my ABN assignment for a year dropping a voluntary reclass packet but it's not guaranteed I'll be approved. Is this a new HRC rule or do you think they might just be trying to retain me as a Scout? Any input, advice or answers are greatly appreciated.

HRC said this? That's very odd, there's even a note in our message book that says to ensure that Soldiers understand Airborne is an additional class required for 92R. HRC Retention team just did a big reshuffle of which people fill which roles. You may want to ask your CC to ask the Opt3 guy to clarify why Airborne is listed as being an additional course in the Training Message from RMT for 92R if it's not authorized.

Be aware though, 92R can be a very demanding job. There are some really awesome great opportunities and some assignments you'll work your butt off. The promotions are also much slower. Most importantly, you better love to jump, most Riggers have over a hundred, often several hundred jumps.
Good luck

SFC (Join to see) I seem to remember having a couple of riggers in my class. I went straight from OSUT at ft Knox to ft Benning and I want to say they had finished AIT but maybe they were going to AIT when we finished. The specialist's question just got me wondering. I guess they would be at the mercy of the army if they couldn't finish airborne and they were on a rigger contract. Thanks for the info

SGT Robert Martin IET and in service reclasses are handled differently. But, Riggers all must go to airborne first and then AIT at Lee. The IET who fail are needs of the Army. The Riggers who fail just return to their duty station in their original MOS.

They're definitely blowing smoke. Or whoever in particular you spoke to was clueless. Good luck, if you have any specific requests about the job feel free to ask, but if you're just thinking Rigger to go to Airborne school, there are easier ways to hate yourself.

Ye. They want to retain you as a Scout and yes their
advice on the "How-To" become a rigger is correct.

Thank you for the reply, SFC. It's not a guarantee that I'll be apporved for the voluntary reclass, though. So it's a gamble that I'm not sure I'm willing to take.. Do you know when they changed this rule?

SPC (Join to see) - Sorry, I retired in 1993. My advice is to write your own letter explaining your reasons. The "technically correct wording" taught to military clerks at the "S-1 School" is woefully inadequate to explain your reasons.
In 1978 th Army in it infinite wisdom converted the old 11D MOS into a 3 way split to MOS 19D Cavalry Scout, 19G Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Crewman and 19H, Armor Reconnaissance Vehicle Driver. Roughly 50% of the old 11Ds were also changed over to Tanks under the PMOSs of 19E M48-M60A1/A3 Armor Crewman, 19F Tank Driver and 19J M60A2 Armor Crewman - totally out of the Cavalry Scout duties.
I wish to remain in the 11D/19D field. The S1 clerk at Squadron typed up a letter for me which included the phrase, "I believe this would be in the best interests of the US Army." He typed up an identical letters for 76 other Army Scouts in our squadron.
I told him I figured the US Army had already made its decision as what was in its best interest so I made him rewrite it. I had him put in that I had never been on a tank (the M551, which to me was a tank even though the Army classed it as a reconnaissance vehicle - it had a turret and was designed to kill other tanks) and all my previous assignments had been dismounted recon in LRRPS and Infantry BN Recon Platoons.
In the final paragraph, I had him type that I believe it would be 'in my best interests' to be changed to the new MOS of 19D Cavalry Scout. I had him finish the paragraph with a thank you for their time for considering my request.
Of the 77 letters sent to DA the other 76 were not granted approval for the letters. I received new order transferring my PMOS from 11D to 19D.
That's my story and as I said earlier - write your own personal type into your request.
Best Wishes, Ralph "ALF" Kelley.

Honestly, HRC is a complete shit-show. If they weren't I would have fought a lot more to stay in.

SFC (Join to see) is going to be your best bet for an insider information answer.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, SFC. It's just frustrating. Recruiting and retention are already in a bad position. I don't feel like I'm asking for anything crazy. I already passed my abn physical with no waivers or anything.
