And that, folks, is why every Sailor is also a trained fire fighter.

Once upon a time, I would have said that it was no big deal...there are fires on ships all the time and nothing to worry about. Somehow, this no longer applies because I have a kid at sea working in the engine room. Damn you, SN Greg Wright! What's funny is that before he started his sea year, I talked with him about casualties aboard ship and what he should do. He actually said all of the right things...but I told him the first thing he needed to learn was how to get to the life raft from his quarters and the the engine room! It's different being a dad.

I have had fires at sea, and I have gone completely dark. Nothing scarier for a sailor.

One (of many) incidents I recall with total clarity is pulling into Seal Beach for a weapons on-load while setting General Quarters for a main space fire. I've never seen forklift operators move so fast in my life, getting missiles and ammo off the pier. We used to go dark and quiet quite often.

CDR Dan Cunningham - I hated Seal Beach with a passion. We were the Force Protection test ship for all the post 9-11 Force Protection tools. Every time we went up there, I got pepper sprayed, pepper gelled, sonic blasted, tased, blasted with new fire hose nozzles, and many other things. My sinuses are closing up just thinking about it. Have a great weekend sir!

LT Brad McInnis - Charleston, SC was always much better than SB, although the transit was more difficult. The pilots were 'interesting' - perhaps the best I've ever seen anywhere. I don't believe I would have done well getting sprayed, tased and blasted!
You have a great weekend too!

SN Greg Wright "When All Else Fails every Marine, Every Soldier is a Rifleman. When All Else Fails Every Sailor is a Fireman" Yep! Fortunately/Unfortunately when Those Skills were required of Me while in Navy Blue I ended up Fighting a Forest Fire in West Virginia, Using a Diggin Tool to Cut a Fire Line, I suspect that a Soldier or Marine would have been better suited for that CTOSN ;)

SN Greg Wright Hopefully the Vessel or Cargo isn't labeled a "Hazard to Navigation" Since We Both Know what Gunners Mates will do to it.
