Everyone knows a "Slim". The Military loves nicknames...for everything from coffee aka: java, cup of Joe, brew...or for Leaders: The Old Man, Top, CO...etc. Food can be anything from : chow, rations, mess, etc. And the same goes for characters that show up in every: Company, Squad, Platoon, Flight, Squadron or ship. Everyone knows a : Short Round, Pops, Tiny, Cookie, Junior...but today, I want to talk about Slim.
I met three in my career. One was six foot seven and weighed in at 175 pounds. 175 pounds doesn't sound skinny (and skinny is another character) but when spread over six and half feet ...even the word "Lanky" doesn't fit. Another guy was six foot one, and he weighed in at a whopping 132 pounds. We all thought he wore Jump Boots to hold him upright in the wind. My favorite "Slim" tho, was my height, five foot six. But unlike me, he barely tipped the scales to triple digits.
He weighed in at 101 pounds. And he was a three time State Champion at the 98 pound weight class. As he says: "I never had to try and make weight. I didn't break 90 pounds until I joined the Army and they put all that muscle on me."
He was not only slim, but wiry. And many a poor fool found out how tough he was in our hand to hand drills.
I am sure you all knew at least one Slim ...in your time in Service. Me? I was a short round.

Yes, we love nicknames and call signs and other "code" that only insiders get.

I never met a "SLIM" in the army, but in the 82ABN, we had a black man we called, Andy Andersen, he was tall and big. Great guy from South Carolina, he would go home for the weekends, and bring back for us, fried squirrel, rabbit and moon shine. I never ate squirrel, rabbit or had moon shine before then, I'm from an island.
But, with the SWAT team here, going through CQB and repelling training, we had a SEAL-1 repelling instructer nicked named, "Neck Bone he was tall and lenky."
