Good afternoon and Happy New Year, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Galaxies and the South Celestial Pole." We see the Southern Cross with our Milky Way draped across the top of the frame. At the bottom of the frame (left to right) are the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. Trace a line along the vertical bar of the Southern Cross down towards the center of this image and you'll run into Sigma Octanis. Click on the "Just look" link on the APOD page (I had to) if you aren't familiar with star charts in the Southern Hemisphere.

I've never been "down under," but I would like to see the Southern Cross and Clouds of Magellan before I check out.

Happy New Year Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and thank you for this New Years APOD regarding the Galaxies and the South Celestial Pole... I, for one would like to see more of the Milky Way and beyond from South of the Equator... This was a brilliant message!!!
