Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the October 22nd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "NGC 1499: The California Nebula." We have RED (Remember Everyone Deployed) Friday...let's carry it over one more day, shall we? The red of NGC 1499 is from the presence of ionized hydrogen, likely produced by radiation from the star Xi Persei (located just to the right). The California Nebula lies about 1,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Perseus.
NGC 1499 was discovered by astronomer E. E. Barnard in 1884. Interestingly, its zenith in the sky transits over central California as that latitude matches the declination (+36° 25′ 18.0″) of the nebula.

Interesting that it both looks like and is positioned over California.
