I'm sorry, but if you're straddling a police officer and beating him, you should expect to get shot, by the cop, by backup, or by a good Samaritan. Good shoot. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

How about if the individual is standing and punching the officer in the face? Or even potentially grabbing for weapon. Remember they are unarmed. The police deserve support and have an impossible job with political correctness

Yes. This officer was obviously unable to defend himself and the Good Samaritan acted in good faith.

Personally, I think the officer is in need of some serious self-defense training. It appears he has issues with restraining suspects and he let the dead man get the better of him in a fight.

I agree, but with political correctness, it's probably another 50% decision time to withdraw weapon. Of course criminals are going to take advantage and the policeman is in a no win situation.
