No Excuse. Location, uniform, real or fake, this doesn't make sense. Can you explain?

Can someone explain this to me?

My initial reaction is this is real.

1 - They are wearing a National Guard patch. As MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca stated, NG sets up recruiting booths at some of the strangest events. This was likely at a trade show/ community event, and the soldiers thought it'd be funny.

2 - Their M-4s have butt stock/ rack numbers on them from a label maker. I've never done this with my personal weapons, as I know how many I have, can count them immediately, and do not sign them out.

3 - Those appear to be M-68 optics on their M-4s. No one I know has bought an M-68 for their personal AR, and I would assume an airsoft player would represent something far more "high-speed" than an M-68.

4 - They are all showing signs of safe weapon handling, nobody is flagging anyone, and their fingers are not in the trigger well. Additionally, all the weapons appear to be clear, as there is no magazine inserted. Again, a faker/ poser would make these simple mistakes, giving them away.

5 - The SPC on the far right of the picture was likely the victim of a prank, and someone switched his unit patch to the right arm, and his flag to the left. His uniform is straight other than that, as are the uniforms of the other two. If it had not been a prank, someone would likely have fixed him.

6 - It is kind of funny. Sometimes we might need to lighten up. Would there be the same reaction if they didn't look jacked up? They are not being rude, insensitive (the opposite, actually) or degrading anyone.

I'm not buying the prank idea at all. I can't say for all National Guard Units, but comparing my active duty units to my National Guard Unit, Active Duty is far more concerned with the minor details and gets all in a huff if you get something off where my National Guard Unit would be more like, meh whatever. Someone might, if you were lucky, pull you aside and help you correct it out of view of everyone else, but they wouldn't make a big to-do about it as they would in the Active Duty units I was in. Although we had the BDU and it's a lot less likely to get it wrong unless you did them yourself which nobody did. Class A's were a different story. A lot easier to get something wrong there.

I'm quite embarrassed that they seem to be with the PA Guard. The PA Guard tends to be better than some other states. But them again, I did retire a while back. I can think of at least 1 PA Guard unit ate up enough to allow this. By the way, we got issued the M-68 sites in Iraq & never had a supply system to get batteries for them. You can buy them but who'd want them?

SSG Ralph Watkins - Yea, thats pretty rough. Certainly not a representation of anything I would expect from PA but like you its been a while. It looks like they dragged a few RSP guys and tossed some patches at them for the event. This is the only way I can see this happening.

SPC Molnar, as a retired recruiter for the National Guard (15 years) you are partially correct. I was in California (moved out of state as soon as I retired) and as you know they have many LGBT events. We had specific training so we could (NO choice) go there and set up a recruiting booth. Doesn't mean we supported them or their beliefs. We went looking for contracts.

2 Words - "Recruiting Opportunity"

In the NG you'd be surprised at the places we set up recruiting stations at. The beach in the summer, the mall, Old Home Day celebrations, you name it, any event, within reason, that a crowd will be gathering at. This doesn't surprise me in the least. Here's my surprised face :-|

Recruiting stations with weapons??? You NG guys are out of control. LOL! I was stationed in PA and my buddy was the SGM of the PA NG out of Scranton and that looks like the patch he wore. I think his unit was the 55th or something like that...

Oh that's not the best of it SPC(P) Jay Heenan we have this tricked out "recruiting mobile" - a HMMWV with a recruiting poster and flags digital paint job and hi-tech gigawat stereo system that tows a mobile rock climbing wall.

I've done my share of recruiting and we even took Ma Duce and MK-19s with us. The bigger the toy, the more interest you generate

Job Fairs was the last time I saw one he was not so happy in a sense. But he had the best offer to any person who had been laid off from the oil business in West Texas.

I guess it's a good thing officers are technically supposed to smoke enlisted soldiers

I never smoked a soldier once. Not my place. Had great NCOs around me who were on top of those aspects.
