Study linked Agent Orange to rare blood cancer
A recent study found that Vietnam War veterans exposed to AO have a higher risk of developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a rare blood and bone marrow cancer. This is the first study to clearly connect MDS to Agent Orange.
The research was done by doctors at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (University of Miami) and was presented at the 2025 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. The study found that veterans exposed to Agent Orange tended to develop MDS earlier and in more aggressive forms, which can sometimes progress to leukemia.
This new evidence could help veterans with MDS get better care, screenings, and VA benefits, since many have struggled for years without proof of a connection to their service.
