What is the proper term for a Marine who is no longer serving?

I'm writing a story about a Marine who is no longer serving and I wanted to know how to properly describe his status. I know Marines like to say there is no such thing as an ex-Marine, so what would be the correct term? Would it be "Marine veteran" or something else?

LOL! But one doesn't have to be able to read to "hear" the term when one is "called" an ex-Marine.

SSgt Danny Radcliffe - The term for a Marine that voluntarily decided he or she no longer wanted to serve on active duty(and there's no shame in that decision), is Former Marine. If ones ego is so large until they cant face that fact, I suggest you either re-join or never get out in the first place

-War is called "Hell" for a reason. Because, although this sinful world has forced us to engage in it sometimes or ourselves be destroyed I don't think it's appropriate to glorify in dropping the A-Bomb which killed millions of innocent civilians. Let's not take this chest pounding contest too far.

SPC Chris Ison - "Marine" is a proper noun, i.e., it's capitalized. I had an excellent English teacher in HS!
