Unit history

The 315th Engineer Battalion was originally constituted on August 5th, 1917 in the National Army as the 315th Engineer Regiment - a subordinate element of the 90th Infantry Division. The unit was organized for World War I in which it saw action at St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine.
The 315th returned to the States after the war in 1919, and spent the interwar years at San Antonio, Texas. The unit was reorganized and redesignated as the 315th Engineer Combat Battalion in 1943, where it was once again sent to Europe to fight in World War 2. Elements of the Battalion took part in the landings on Utah Beach during D-Day, and from there moved on to join the offensive in Northern France alongside the Infantry Battalions within the 90th Infantry Division. The Battalion participated in the Ardennes-Alsace offensive, the move into the Rhineland and Central Europe all the way through until the war's end.
Following its return to the United States, the 315th returned to San Antonio where it was redesignated as the 315th Engineer Battalion, released from Active service and returned to the Organized Reserve Corps (later to be redesignated in 1952 as the Army Reserve). In 1959, the Battalion was moved to Houston, Texas and at the end of 1965, the Battalion was deactivated and subsequently relieved from assignment to the 90th Infantry Division.
On October 16th, 2009, the 315th's colors were uncased after 43 years with the activation of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the Forward Support Company at Camp Pendleton, California. The Battalion was subsequently assigned to the 301st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 416th Theater Engineer Command. 4 years later, the Battalion was again ordered to Active service in support of the War on Terrorism.
On April 3rd, 2014, the Battalion made its way to Fort Bliss, Texas for mobilization and pre-deployment training prior to being sent to Afghanistan. In May, 2014, the Battalion arrived at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, where it was attached to the 45th Sustainment Brigade in support of the Central Command's Materiel Recovery Element with a mission to take command and control over Engineer Companies within Southern Afghanistan as they assisted with the drawdown and reduction of U.S. presence within the country. The Battalion remained at Kandahar Airfield, where it took command and control over several Active Duty, and National Guard Engineer companies as they assisted in the transfer of several Forward Operating Bases back to the Afghan government. With its mission complete, the Battalion redeployed back to Fort Bliss, Texas towards the end of November, 2014. The Battalion was subsequently released from Active Duty service on May 6th, 2015 and reverted to Reserve status.
