In my 21 year career, I don’t remember shots being optional.

Interesting choices. Get the shot or get your career shot. Back in the '70's I can remember pay call and they had a Corpsman email to give you a shot of something. The dilemma was to get the shot or not get paid. Needed the money so got the shot.
