Seriously it was politics from the start, not operational needs or requirements. Trump proposed the move to Alabama to punish the blue state of Colorado. Infrastructure and survivability seems to support the decision for it to remain where it is.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen , Well Huntsville was named after John Hunt who had enslaved as many as 77 people, many of them children, including farm and industrial and domestic workers.
Are they going to change Huntsville's name in keeping with name changes Congress directed?
(That was sarcasm for the undiscerning.)

SFC Ralph E Kelley Ah, so John Hunt's slaves learned the beneficial aspects of space operations which made Huntsville the logical choice.
(More of your variety of sarcasm.)

MSG Joseph Cristofaro Could be, I do recall a lot of poor looking sharecropper farms around Huntsville in the 50s.

How do we know there is not a portal being used for space travel, so it really needn't be near a convenient rocket launch site. (a fan of stargate!)

This was a no-brainer. The right decision no matter who made the call. (HQ AFSC 1998-2002)
