Here's another one you can add to the list. The one prominent thing I remember to this day that came from my very first First Sergeant's mouth was, "Horse collar, you eye balling me?" That was in Fort Ord, CA November 1975. For the remainder of my tour from Private to Specialist my name was "Horse Collar!"

NCO's and junior enlisted shouldn't be hanging out together because of fraternization (which is actually between enlisted and officers)!
Junior enlisted member gets DUI and NCO's get chewed out and told they should have been there to make sure that it didn't happen.
So confusing???
I mean, do I fraternize and risk a butt chewing but keep my juniors out of trouble, or not fraternize and get a butt chewing anyway because my junior enlisted got into trouble because I wasn't there? Which one First Sgt?

Sgt Adam Jennings Hardcharger....when I was promoted to Cpl back in the early 90's, my SSgt told me that I no longer had "friends" below my rank. He took me to the chowhall and I sat with the NCO's which was segregated from the rest of the chowhall. He explained to me that there will come a time when I have to issue an order to one of my "friends" that could lead to their deaths. I was also living in a squad bay for a short period of time and that made things so much easier to manage my Marines. Right after I picked up Cpl, we moved into the barracks and I all of the sudden lost touch with my fire team. I totally agree with keeping the ranks separate but I do think an NCO getting yelled at because one of their subordinates was out drinking is BS. There needs to be some individual accountability.

We used to have a 1SG that would say just before a detail begins...If it grows cut it, if it doesn't move paint it, if it does move, salute it, pick it up, or park it somewhere else. 1. 2. 3. and Go.

Oh, Same 1SG... His change to our unit included the Unit MOTTO... "Feel the Pain". We would end a formation with a Loud Exclamation of "FEEL THE PAIN!!!"

Wasn't me "correcting" the 1SG, but it was one of the few conversations that has had a lasting impact on me. Was able to learn about the "lozenge" and "trucks." Admittedly, I didn't exactly understand it when I heard it at first.
1SG: Do you see these diamonds on my collars?!
SPC: That's a lozenge first sergeant...
1SG: Bullshit! It's only a god damned lozenge when some knucklehead says there are hundreds of trucks on post!

SGT (Join to see) WOW... that takes me back a ways... when I was first in back in 1982 our old vietnam 1SG used to say that about trucks and the lozenge.
