There was no Sailor's Creed when I was in the Navy and I just read it in depth and realized it was very poorly written. We need to re-write it to reflect the Navy, not some generic fighting force.

They won't let me vote this with "unlike" because I don't have enough "influence". So let me just state that the creed properly reflects my personal ethos as a Sailor since 1958.

I am a United States Sailor. I will erase "man" from my vocabulary and serve proudly on all gender-neutral ships. I represent the fighting spirit of the Navy and our sister service Coast Guard. In the face of danger, I shall not waive a timeout card and will bravely overtake the enemy. I will shave once a day or as directed by the President. I will not engage in political debates unless others doubt my views. Together we are one force against all evil (beer, political incorrectness, lap dancers) and will unite to keep United States of America, a great nation.

I agree our service, along with all the other services, has gotten softer and is being guided in a direction more of a corporation than a military force. However, for our retirees to take away from the service and sacrifice our shipmates make today is a disgrace. The United States Navy is still the premier Naval force in the world. We still get tattoos, cuss, fight and enjoy many acts of debauchery everywhere we go. Regardless of the politics we are ready to fight anywhere in the world within a matter of hours. This is made possible through incredible warships deployed around the world at any given moment and the fine Sailors onboard who are highly trained to operate the advanced technological systems. So sure... Along with the rest of the country there is a push to be PC and we represent the fighting spirit of those who have gone before us to defend freedom and democracy around the world and I thank you shipmates for your service. Remember the next time that you want to criticize the "new Navy", that if you put our new Navy up against the old Navy, we would blow it out of the water.

Your arrogance about blowing up the old Navy, reminds me of a story I read years ago about two crew. One from HMS Hood and the other from the German battleship Bismark. They got to know each other quite well before their countries went to war. As sailors will be sailors they bragged about taking out each other, just as you did. Unfortunately war did come and the HMS Hood was destroyed by the Bismark in May of 1941. I have often wondered what their thoughts were after the action on the high seas. Did it finally sink in just how quick death is? And what it is like to lose friends? something to really think about before blowing smoke about how good you are.

The Sailor's Creed was written by a panel directed by then CNO Admiral Kelso in 1993. It was modified slightly by Admiral Boorda in 1994, and then again in 1997.
I'm not sure what the problem is with it. It's clear enough and says what it needs to say.

Why is it that the Navy that has been around for over 240 years, now needs a "Sailor's Creed?" No sailor has needed this in the history of the Navy, until now. Every blue jacket knows why he is in the navy and is to fight when so ordered. No sailor needed the creed during World Wars 1 & 2. No sailor needed the creed during the cold wars. What has changed in the sailors today? Have they lost the respect for our country and flag?
