What is the worst meal you were ever served in a mess hall?

Liver. I don't hate liver. In fact, I've had some very good liver served with fried onions and liberally doused in ketchup. I love liverwurst and chopped liver (I make my own with roasted garlic and schmatz – real chicken fat). It may clog the arteries but still my heart cries for more. However, the liver I was once served in a mess hall following the end of Advanced Infantry Training was inedible. It was even worse the following day when I was sent to a nearby Army recreation area to paint a cabin and discovered the mess hall had sent sandwiches made with dried out, leftover liver clapped between two slices of white bread. Even the sergeant supervising the work detail was annoyed and there was no place nearby to purchase a decent meal. Yes, that was the worst.

I love fish which is why I avoid it at most restaurants let alone mess halls. Giving a choice, any choice, rather than fish is a blessing in disguise.

LOL ! Thats why I mostly hit the short order line on Thursday or hit the strasse for German Food.

The only problem with meals at Ranger School was you learned how to wolf down your meals and I still do it today!! Talk about programming people!!!

Liver-consolidated mess Fort Dix NJ.1965 I still wake up screaming dreaming of that horrible plate of Liver suffice to say not a good memory.

Sadly, in those days, it was eat what was put on your plate or starve. That's why so many who served in that time became addicted to Tabasco Sauce - It didn't improve the flavor. It simply destroyed the taste buds.

CPT Jack Durish - Tabasco Sauce and the NCO club were my two saviors from starvation,unfortunately the smell of Liver and onions still give me flashbacks ugh!
