Many bring their families and ghost their rooms on base and live off base in an apt. Family will not be tricare prime nor be able to enroll in DODDS schools if not CSP. I was the Tricare/Pt admin Officer and we saw a lot of this, which cost the govt hundreds of thousands if we had to AE a family member back to the states due to accident or injury because the care was unavailable on the peninsula or I cure a $150k at an off base hospital for inpatient hospitalization for grave health complications. I've also seen people de-striped for bringing their families non-CSP. Bottom line is you can't be double dipping, collecting family separation allowance and double BAH

SFC (Join to see) - Definitely take CSP if offered. It will be an experience of a lifetime for your family. You have the rest of your life to live in the states so go for it!! Also, don't take mid-tour LV in the states, travel through Korea on those ITT trips on the wknd and travel through Asia for longer trips. RT to cities like Tokyo and Shanghai are only $200 and 2-3 hrs each way direct flights. Thailand and Philippines are about 5 hrs from Seoul. I visited China, Japan and Thailand but regret not having traveled to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines which were all within an arms reach. Get the kiddos enrolled in schools asap. NonCSP dependents go to Korean school on the economy or private school, but who has $20k to dish out on tuition? DODDS schools are like private schools and a wonderful privilege and entitlement for CSP families.

SSgt Clare May - We had about 7k enrolled in TRICARE Prime at Osan, close to active duty base population. But we were seeing about 11k pts, so it was obvious how many dependents were nonCSP minus our retirees. Most don't get in trouble, but we did have to AE a few and drew a ton of attention to the issue. When I got to GK, our CC was super strict and de-striped a MSgt for bringing his family to Deutschland nonCSP because they did not get overseas medical clearance to live there, but brought them anyways and put them at risk.

Lt Col (Join to see) - Will do ma'am I'm going to start the process on Tuesday. Like that MSG I also have an EFMP issue that my prevent me from bringing my family to Korea. However I'm not willing to even take a chance with trying to thwart the system seems like an article 15 waiting to happen.

I did that my second tour as an E5, in 1985-86. I paid for the one way tickets, costs about 5k, in USA Dollars mind you, back then... flew them into Seoul, picked them up in a kimche cab, got back to Osan AB that evening, purchased home school programs for my step kids, another 3-4k US, had to find a place to live downtown, paid for the passports, the spouse and kids could use on base facilities but, couldn't use the school system due to over crowding... When it got close to leaving, I took my 30 days and we flew space A back on a C5a... bumped at Yakota AB Japan, just so happens that was when the shuttle blew up after launch oin '86. Back then it was $10.00 per hop for the kids and wife... Getting there was the hard part... getting back in time to DEROS was the easy part. Spent out of my pocket over 10 grand... Got dinged when the wife bought two jars of mayonnaise in the same month in violation of the ration rules which ending up costing me an 3 point award... me a funny thing, we divorced 2 years alter after going to Montana and I departed the military career to seek out my childhood dream of being the Sheriff back home.

I brought my wife to Kunsan in 1986 command sponsored and the idiots in Ration Control tried to give me an Article 15 because we were buying too much for a single NCO. I had to show them a copy of my orders to prove my spouse was authorized. At that time you had to stay 2 years so when I left and went to Osan for 2 more years on a COT, Kunsan counted as 2 short tours and Osan counted as a long tour. At least that's what it says on my DD-214.
