Identifying units, from a WWII veteran (humor). How would you relate it to recent conflicts?

He posted this online made me almost choke on the water I was drinking because I was laughing so hard it seems true though about the forces during WW2 and still today for us today
“If you encounter a unit you can’t identify, fire one round over their heads so it won’t hit anyone.
“If the response is a fusillade of rapid, precise rifle fire, they’re British.
“If the response is a s**tstorm of machine-gun fire, they’re German.
“If they throw down their arms and surrender, they’re Italian.
“And if nothing happens for five minutes and then your position is obliterated by support artillery or an airstrike, they’re American.”

Funny, SPC (Join to see)! Reminiscent of a quote widely attributed to Patton, although it can't be confirmed, "I'd rather have a German division in front of me than a French division behind me!"

Sir, I would agree the Germans had amazing tactics of warfare I studied military history in highschool for three years and on my own espically WW2 military history. As much as people wouldn't like to believe a lot of technology and medical practices today and military planning comes from what NAZI Germany had perfected and tested themselves. I still think what they did was horribly wrong but some of it is intresting to look at.

SPC (Join to see), the Germans were creative, no doubt. However, Patton (or whoever) was really bashing the French. It's like your Italian army comment. A French division behind us, would be no division at all!

Sir, I can understand that had to look at it. The French further back though we're a force to be reckoned with. But they lacked foresight of improving training, tactics, and armament. But it seems in war learning how your enemy fights generally takes engaging them once and figuring out how to beat them with there owns tactics.

SPC (Join to see) absolutely. The French army had every advantage. At one point they could have obliterated the majority of the German offensive as it was in a narrow road. A French scout plane saw that, sent word but the Commanding general did not want a phone around him for fear of espionage. The entire German offensive could have been stopped numerous times. But the French figured the war would be fought like the Great War and not like the Lightening War Hitler counted on.
