Ex-Military and Retired Military is a highly debated topic in my family. As someone who is enlisting currently, I am conflicted about this matter. One side argues that "Ex-Military" means you where dishonorable discharged and claims the term "retired" or just veteran is the correct way to say it. The other side claims it really doesn't matter. Both sides have service members and non-service but it really doesn't seem to end it.

Forest Holiday Not that big a deal unless you're talking about a Marine "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" Now I could call myself Ex-Military but that isn't very Accurate, More Accurate would be Retired Military but even better is How I Sign. I could be wrong SrA John Monette but I do believe the mantality of the marines is because they are usually first in! There training mentality is to go blazing guns in and be ready for death. The other branches prepare you for the event of death, but the Marines are... As they say Born to die. Or something like that. So it has a lot to do with “usually” and in most cases the Marines were sent in first, and the ARMY cake second to clean up the mess. Lol.. just kidding. That was a joke we ran with back in the day. But that’s really what I think as to why they say that. They have a more colorful reasoning behind it.

SrA John Monette - Be Careful what You wish for. I joined to work with the coolest electronics, Radios and Antennas, Yep I got to do that. "In the Rear with the Gear" doing Strategic Intelligence. The Last 1/3 of My Career they had Me doing Tactical Intelligence, If anyone asks You to do "Tactical Intelligence" tell them to Go to Hell. Sitting 20 Miles Off Bushehr Iran Pissing them Off is Not Recommended but that is what I did at the end.

If you have a set of orders that says you are retired, then you are retired. Medical or otherwise. Really not a debate. If you did not retire, you are prior service. Ex-military...I guess when you separate from the service, it's kind of like a divorce...I could take it or leave it.

There are no Ex-Marines. Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Most folks that served think of themselves as veterans rather than Ex-military. If you served, you are a veteran. If you served for 20 or more years, you are retired. What branch are you enlisting in, and when?

When I was a kid the veterans in my neighborhood told me that the only ex-Marine was Lee Harvey Oswald. I still won't refer to any Marine veteran as an "ex-Marine".
