Do bad years, where you don’t get retirement credit, in the reserves count towards my mandatory retirement date (MRD)?

I’m trying to look at my MRD. In the past I had several bad years, meaning I didn’t reach 50 points. They don’t count towards my retirement. A LTC can have 28 years of commissioned service. Because I sat out for several years (but was in the IRR), do I disregard those in computing an MRD? I currently have 21 years of commission service but 19 good years. My MRD is at 28 years. Do I have 7 years left or do I have 9?

IRR Service goes towards that, but MRD is calculated based on commissioning date, not good years.

There are some exceptions, though. For example, my 3.5 years of educational delay time for grad school directly after commissioning, but before my initial report to regular active duty, did not count towards my MRD. Had I served an active duty tour before going to grad school, all my time in grad school would have counted towards MRD. If an exception applies you to be vigilant about what HRC thinks is your MRD when you review your personnel records annually, because sometimes it will revert to the default and need to be corrected to accurately reflect the exception.

You have seven years remaining and you can count on the MRD happening, it happens to thousands of LTC's every year. You can request an exemption to extend, if you are mobilized or in a critical position serving on active duty. I was extended for 18 months due to mobilization.
Your points count, even in bad years, as long as you met the 20 year requirement.
