Her pigtails caught his eye.

A 12-year-old girl ran alongside Dean Prough's Army convoy as it rolled through a small German town. She pleaded for food.

Prough gave the girl a candy bar, then another, and then another. Her name was Maria. He took a picture with her and signed the back, "Dean Prough. Ottumwa, Iowa." He wanted to adopt her, but the Army said no.

SGT (Join to see) - One bright spot other than schooling was Vietnamese family who became shrimpers of the Texas coast. That dad was very small but had son who was 6" and 230 lbs. He eventually played football where he earned All American Honors and best LB in the nation one year. He played for the Cowboys for a few years. Just wanted to share this story.

MAJ Ken Landgren, That's a great story. I've never heard of it. I live close to the Galveston coast and I remember when the Vietnamese began shrimping in Galveston waters. There was almost a civil war between the Vietnamese and local shrimpers. Both sides carried long guns for protection. The locals claimed the Vietnamese were robbing shrimp from their shrimping grounds. Over time, the Vietnamese became the "local" shrimpers.

LTC Stephen F., It would Sir. Almost everyone knows about the headline news. Human interest stories should be up there close to the headlines.
