Traditions from the past: deceased insect, inside carrier landings and bat hangings? Hear of them? Participated?

To develop a sense of cammeradery, , I saw several "games" being played in the club. Sally's was a hole in the wall but everyone loved it and many participated in said games; this still was about Vietnam Era times. I'm only claiming deceased insect; didn't want to buy the whole busy bar a round. These are from the 70s

Didn't play any games in the club. Horse and Cow (famous or infamous submarine bar) is a different matter but, honestly, I can't remember the nights there. :)

I heard many a great story about the Horse and Cow, unfortunately I never had a chance to visit it. When I was stationed at the Sub Base and then NTC San Diego while attending RM A school as a fleet returnee, I was under 21. By the time I turned 21 I was stationed overseas.

Maj Kim Patterson, it is my understanding that the "carrier landings" involved jumping onto a lubricated surface (table, bar, etc.) belly down and trying to snag the "arresting cable" with the ankles. I heard of these, but never saw them. Generally these sorts of drinking games take place where fighter pilots gather. Ground-pounders take a risk trying to get a drink when the pilots are celebrating their most recent survival experiences.

Having been stationed primarily at fighter bases, I first got to be witness to the fun and games. Then my next assignment was to fix it. First move: 2 drink limit at lunch.

Maj Kim Patterson, this happened at lunch? I have seen fighter jocks get plastered and tear the bar apart at the O Club, but that was well into the evening.

It was common custom to have a drink or three with lunch at the time, in civilian business and the military, and you are right, most of the time it was well into the evening that the shenanigans continued. My lips are sealed regarding any actual witness of such behavior.
