Hundreds of U.S. military families are urged to leave southern Turkey amid new concerns about safety, a defense official said Thursday.

The voluntary evacuation potentially affects about 900 people and comes after Turkey recently authorized U.S. combat aircraft to fly missions over Iraq and Syria from a key Turkish military installation.

"This decision was made out of an abundance of caution following the commencement of military operations out of Incirlik Air Base," said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook.

Turkey may be a NATO member but it is also a Muslim country. While the government may technically be our ally polls have shown that a majority of the population does not necessarily agree. Modern Turkey was created as a secular country after the fall of the Ottoman Empire but in recent years the government has been under the control of an Islamic political party. Besides the country becoming more Islamic the Turks are also fighting insurgents on their own soil. It is probably not a real safe place for families.

you guys , SGTs Bodine and Pesz, beat me to this story since I am doing it again 6 months later so it all ties in. Turkey is not that Democratic and they are shutting down and taking over anti-government newspapers. I posted this yesterday.

Exactly. You could see the movement away from secularism and multiculturalism and toward Islamism way back in 2001. I think it has accelerated since then. Unfortunately, they are no longer friends. Get the families out.
