Sweet! In addition to the three or more lectures we got during orientation weekend and the at least two written admonitions, I believe that I will get told not to plagiarize again in the near future.

There is a big difference between plagiarizing in an academic setting such as the War College or the Senior Enlisted Academy and putting together Instructions and Operating Manuals for a Ship or Station. Even in Military School we cannot plagiarize with impunity and ALL students know it.
As we were putting together USS Anzio (CG-68) we shamelessly ripped off and copied the existing documents from our previous sister ships. This was encouraged and made our lives much easier. Names were changed to protect the guilty, but it was all in the name of not reinventing the wheel as LTC (Join to see) pointed out. This was an accepted practice when building a new ship.
However, as everyone knows, in Academia if you use more than a few words from another author, you attribute it. You could probably cite the entire novel War and Peace as long as you gave Leo Tolstoy full credit. Without attribution, most, if not all, members of the academic community consider "borrowing" any thoughts from another complete plagiarizing. In many institutions, this results in failing courses, kicking students out of schools, and even revoking degrees. It is a big deal!

We did it with unit SOPs, reports, you name it. There's a difference between claiming credit for something you didn't do in the academic world and copying best practices among units in documentation.

Sir, can plagiarize anytime you want in the military, except when it comes to schooling. In fact I am encouraged to plagiarize from multiple bosses during my career. Why reinvent the wheel if it is already working?
