Today is the 31st anniversary of the Beiruit Barracks Bombing, where nearly 250 service people were lost. Though most were Marines, there were others from all branches of the military there.
It was devistating to those of us in the Marines, on that base or Cherry Point. So many of us are 'generational Marines' with parents, siblings, cousins, and spouses serving at the same time, and so many of those were lost that day.
I was at a Church Fish Fry, raising money to outfit a home for one of the Marines who had been wounded in Lebanon earlier on, when I heard the news. I remember just sitting there, thinking of my cousin, the husband of a really close friend, my husband's boot-camp buddy, and two neighbors that we knew of in that unit alone, then I got up and walked back to my car, stopping to throw up behind a tree before I reached the car.
To this day, the smell of frying fish makes me ill.

Well, I did a rather interesting and historically significant Det Ops mission in Iraq. I was at Camp Cropper for a period of time, and met a few people who you might see in history books.
The details are likely still classified, but that fact that I did it is not.

A lot of us have those memories... not me, but a lot of people! Me, I was just a driver... and yes, I drove a lot of interesting people, but none really noteworthy, unless you count the Russians who came to Lejeune a few times. That was pretty much an all day trip. Not too far from the flight line, but there were ALWAYS trips to Wal-Mart, and twice a day runs to each and every fast food resturant they could think of. Of course, this was WAYYYYYY back, while the Berlin Wall was still up.

I was in USMC Boot Camp when that happened. You can bet that training intensified that day.

At the time. I was a GySgt on the MSgt promotion list at MCAS Beaufort, SC. We were absolutely positive we were going to go kick somebody's ass over the bombing. But, wasn't to be. :(

A while later... I kinda lost track at the time, I was pulled out of work and told to go get into my Alphas and get to an area on base.... got there, and found myself one of about three hundred Marines who were standing in the very cold rain, listening to Pres. Reagan. I don't recall a thing about his comments, becaus I was staring at Mrs Reagan. She was such a tiny little person, and shivering so badly in the cold rain I kept wanting to run up there and give her my coat.

Well I don't know if you could call this profound but while I was getting out of the corps my friends and my brother in-law were shipping of to desert sheild/Storm. I remember thinking I wonder if I am going to lose any of my friends and family, and was expecting to have to turn around and return to base when I got home and checked in at the reserve center.
