Have you ever found yourself on mail buoy watch?

Ever been handed a kapok life vest and broom and told to fend off any monkeys that try to board during a Suez Canal transit?

How about being sent after the elusive ID10T that the chief needs right away?

I'd like to hear some of the other service gags run on the new guy. Let's hear em please!

A favorite from the artillery world: Hey, PVT, go get the keys to the gate to the impact zone before we go to the field.

Yeah I knew it was BS but had to play along. Sent out for a bucket of BI's (Alternating Signal used to sync up the KW-26 Crypto Equipment).

Not as funny as sending the freshest nub to maneuvering to blow the DCA.

Fresh out of AIT, I was told to go find a box of grid squares by my PSG. I went to supply and asked for an old map, some scissors, and a box. The Supply NCO, knowing full well what was going on, obliged and said "I hope it is worth the push-ups."

It so was.

We had a dude looking all over our FOB for a pole extender. It was pretty awesome.

I have a bucket of steam that I'll gladly trade for a can of emery sparks and a coil of shore line

The fixed wing guys told me a little LOX in a pack of smokes was a good time too. Never saw it in person though.

In the submarine service, you could pretty much get a non-qual (not yet "qualified in submarines") to look for anything. Even if they suspected, they'd still go off 'cuz they wanted that signature!

As a nuke electrician, one of my favorites was to send a non-qual to the Forward IC-man and ask to see the copper magnet used in the navigation gyroscopes.

Another good one is to find the master battery for the sound-powered phones.

And the "mercury wrench" - it adjusts to whatever size bolt you need to work...
