Based on this, I should have received at least 4 AFCOM medals for the times I had to correct subordinates, instead of the one I received for actually doing something above and beyond what was expected of me everyday. Guess medal inflation is worse than I realized. Don't even understand how this would warrant a coin, but then again I don't get the whole coin thing either.

The 1SG is doing what is expected of them. Soldiers need to realize that there could be consequences for what they write on social media forums. It is worthy of an ARCOM? No way! But we all know that awards are not always given out fairly to Soldiers...

She looks a little surprised about it herself.

She corrected them and because they weren't her soldiers directly, she elevated it. Yes that is how the Army works. If the soldiers aren't in your unit, good luck punishing, training or even holding accountable troops who don't belong to you.
But SHE is the one who needs a kick in the butt for poor leadership?

Make on-the-spot corrections as necessary, contacting chains of command as needed....sure, that's what a 1SG should do.

Getting an ARCOM for dealing with internet trolls? Nope.

If that's the case, I should have a Bronze Star by now...

I would say that she did so something beyond that was expected to her. I am glad she did such a thing. If they are wearing a uniform they are representing the military. They should conduct themselves in a professional manner.

MSG Sommer Brown I would say she did go above and for sending a copy of he email to the top guy in the army over SHARP. I just think the army used this for attention. Could you imagine tagging MG Lusk in an email and then getting awarded for it. I don't think it would turn out so well.

I don't believe I would have handled things the way she handled them, however the action to get something addressed which reflected poorly on the Army was going a bit above and beyond her normal job. At the same time, I don't thing addressing a single instance makes this event worthy of an ARCOM, had she written a white paper (based on this instance) that resulted in a changes to Army policy... ok, I can see an ARCOM for that.

Like it or not it is always up to the final approving authority. In this case he/she thought she did. Why question it? All of us who have been in for more than a minute saw people get awards for things that other did, for things we feel that they should not have received them for, had very very questionable ht/wt or apft that just seem to magically pass right before PCS, not receive the level or award that we felt that they deserved, or not receive an award at all. It does us no good to question it as we have no control over it. Get upset and then get over it if you feel that she did not deserve it. If you felt she deserves it then smile and move on as well. Just my thought.

The exact reason that she received this award was for doing her job. In this age of technology and social media, part of a supervisor's role is to monitor social networking sites to ensure their SM are adhering to written policies. Here is an Army policy published Jan 2013, in particular the section that says: "It is your responsibility as a leader to monitor Soldiers' conduct on social media platforms."

Isnt this the same thing as governing if a MINOR who is a service member can drink or have a female/male guest in their room at night???? Same situation, they can die for their country but are not allowed to drink or have some fun with the opposite sex???

The ARCOM was for her participation with the CAPE and contribution to the Army SHARP programs.
