Are fake disabilities affecting other Veterans?

So I met this guy the other day that is a gym buddy of our kids (20 and 17 year old). Obviously I don't know the entire story but he is 100% disabled for hearing and his back. The moment I met him I wanted to call bullshit. He walked in our home looking like a cartoon superhero and started talking about his workout. He does parkour, and extreme weight lifting. And has since he was in and now that he is out. That immediately raise a flag of bullshit beyond him explaining to us his philosophy on working out and people. He also started to go into his time as a leader in the Air Force...he got out as a E4. I quickly identified him as "that guy". So anyways.
I live in constant pain from protruding disc in my neck. It is intensified by any variety of things but mostly just doing shit. I have days where I literally just want to lay in bed with my percocet in hand and try and numb myself to feel a little normal again and other where it just feels like some one is punching me over and over. I am 50% broken. I don't claim to be more or less broken than I am and don't really care that much about how broken I am I just avoid doing stuff that makes it a percocet day.
So my questions are this;
People that may or may not be using the system are they really hurting the system?
Do you care if people fake disability to get more from a system?
How would you handle your kid around this guy who you know is a freaking idiot?

There is a vast sea of veterans out there who claim to have a disability with no real problems at all, and use that fakery to the max. It does hurt veterans who have a legitimate disability, but as you know there will always be these D-bags out there. I would try to route your child away from this dude, just in case some of the D-baggery would fall off and your child might step in it. One can only hope that in the mighty world of karma, this guy gets his!

When I lived in the William Booth Center Off Maynard Ave in Seattle ( a homeless shelter for Vets) I saw the naked reality about vets and the lies they tell just to get disability. Drugs were the main reason most of them chose to "fake" what ever they were receiving disability for, the pay was another. I would set there and listen to them throughout the day talk to other "new" Homeless vets and tell them step by step what they should do to get the maximum effect from the VA. Pills would sell for sometimes 70.00 a pill !!! depending on what it was. It made me sick.

Every disability rating by the VA has to go through a lot of scrutiny, including X-Rays, MRIs, and Doctor's exams, before any rating is granted. I don't know if this guy is exagerating or not, but I would say to be very careful about assuming someones health based on their activities. Case in point. I supervised a person who everyone though was lazy, unmotivated, and a crybaby. She constantly complained of migraines and had tons of sick calls/doctors appointments. She eventually got out on a medical retirement for chronic migraines. Everyone assumed she just complained enough and the board granted it. A year later she was diagnosed with full blown degenerative MS, the headaches were an early indicator. Gradually she became wheelchair bound, and eventually committed suicide because she didn't want to burden her children with caring for her. Everyone thought she was faking and 'called her bullshit' --except she wasn't faking.

I'm going to throw out the bullshit flag. I'm rated at 0% for hearing loss in both ears and 10% for tinnitus in both ears.
So I would ask to see his DD214 and Statement of Disability from the VA. If he is who he claims to be he'll have no problem showing you his documents. If he's a poser (and I suspect he is) he'll say something like "I lost them" or "It's none of your business." Tell him to hit bricks and urge your kids not to associate with him.

My hearing is bad but one ear and they didn't even give me a % for it just batteries for life and as for him being a 100% I doubt it

As with anything there are limited resources. Every fake or embellished claim is a drain on those resources which limits what vets can get who actually need it. So yes I do care deeply about this issue. I don't have kids so I cannot speak to how I would react in their presence but I would call him out on it.

I agree that we really can do nothing about it. I have seen people in law enforcement that receive 100 percent. There is a guy here now that is receiving 100 percent. Plus his pension. Now he is in LE. I am not judging him because it is his perogative. Meanwhile I had 16 injuries and only got 20 percent. Not even for the major ones. It's all craziness.

The people who fake there disabilitys do hurt the ones of us trying to get what we need. I know that I use to work out but my doctor advised me that it I kept doing it that I would need more surgerys and would mess myself up more. So I quit working out.
I can't really say that if I care they fake there disabilitys and get more than what they deserve because the system is broke n I don't know a way to fix it.
I would tell my kids the truth about the guy though. There is no E4 that is a true leader in any service. Just have them watch there selves and it might be a good idea to limit there being around him till you can stop them from being around the gym with this guy.

I'm not saying that a E4 can't be a true leader or isn't a true leader but you have some that get out as and E4 n blow up there stories. REMF's are some who make stories bigger than life. I've met a few

You are so right on that Spc Heenan soon to be Sgt Heenan we hope. I have ran into a few myself. The worse one who make me laugh are some of the ones who stand on the coner with signs saying disable vet and homeless please help. Some of them are not vets at all. I met one guy who did the pan handling and he told me in a bad week he would come home with 1500 a week. This guy had two houses and four cars n was in the bar drinking every night. This was in Fayetteville by the way

I always thought it was fishy that the Air Force veterans I worked with all had higher disability %'s than the Army and USMC vets. Then I found out they all claimed sleep apnea which is worth 40% by itself.

Never mind payments. Sometimes, it's hard enough just to get the VA to treat the injuries we received on active duty deployments. Like all bureaucrats, their #1 mission is to say NO.
