Are you the lone service member in the family or are you a part of a long family tradition? My dad went through the Merchant Marine Academy but didn’t go active duty Navy. Grandpa was a Corporal during WWII and did time on various pacific islands including Guam. I could never finagle any war stories out of grandpa but I know his family served in the military as well. Anyone else have pictures of family in uniform and want to share their military experiences?

I wish I knew more about my family history but too many adoptions. My wife is Japanese and can go back over 400 years. Some Japanese people can accurately trace back over 800 years.

Both grandfathers served on n WW2. One in the US Navy and the other was a German Infantryman on the eastern front that was shot and was a POW in a Siberian Gulag for the duration of the war. My dad was a Vietnam era draftee and stayed in for 12 years (all in the National Guard). I served for 25 years and two cousin, both of whom served 4 years.

My wife is Japanese and while my grandfather made it home from WW2 she was not as fortunate. You are the only other person I’ve met with family of opposite sides of a conflict at the same time.

SFC Mark Merino I never fully understood how unique of a lineage I I have in terms of military service. My grandfather passed In the summer of 1985 when I was 14, and it wasn’t until GWOT that I fully appreciated how unique my family‘s military history is.

Our families Military service started with Four of My relatives when We were still a British colony during the French and Indian War. One April 19th 1775 three of My relatives marched with the Minutemen from Sudbury, Massachusetts to Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts to Battle the British at Old North Bridge. It’s been my past experience that if you brag it never happened and what did happened you kept it between you and god.
