Army assigned me to a unit with no MTOE skill level position for me

I PCS to Fort Hood a few weeks ago, last week my ERB showed "Incoming Personnel" with 12T3O (I am SSG), today ERB shows "Tech Engr SGT" with 12T2O. I verified with S-1 and there is no MTOE position for my level with in the battalion.
I am sure that staying in a lower skill level job results negative for my career. Should I start visiting other units looking for a job?
I have an impressive record (everyone may say that but for real, I do) supported with great NCOERs, leadership and technical experience, education, max APFT and all the desirable trainings that any unit needs (EO, SHARP, UMO, USR).
Please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

12Ts are grossly overstrength. According to the FY15 goals, none of us are in a good position. Skill levels 3 and 4 are prime candidates for QMP and QSP. FMSweb is a helpful tool, but it's not much good if there are no slots anywhere. I know you are committed to the MOS, as am I, but you may want to consider the 120. All of your project management and other MOS experience and skills would still be relevant in that new job. Just my 2 cents...

Unless you have a S&D Detachment in your BN and the 1 SSG position that now exist is not filled you will not find a 12T3O position in MTOE units. The positions went from 48 to 8 Army wide. The direction you should be headed is asking every Senior Leader in the Engineer Regiment how they made such a bone headed mistake and how they are going to fix it. If you only care about your progression and not the MOS then just reclass and get out of the way for those that are passionate about our job.

Roger. Those who are dedicated will stay in no matter what. We loose a lot of good Soldiers this way though. The Army has shifted away from technical skills. We now have 4 MOS specialties condensed into one. Each MOS took 12 - 16 weeks of training, we now only get 12 total. You tell me where they are placing their importance.

Working one down will not necessarily hurt your career. You are a staff in an e5 slot, no big deal. It's what you do during that time that matters. Two up, one down. I have been in a 5 slot for going on 7 months, but I perform duties and functions that are expected of a SSG.

Start looking at working outside our MOS to stay competive. Unfortunately the Army knew about this change at least two years ago from what I heard while in SLC. Work on civilian ed and also look into certs on the COOL website for our MOS. I am literally doing all I can to stay relevant and also stay somewhat in our MOS so I can go Warrant. Good Luck!

I been playing with the FMS web and checking at the MTOEs of the local units and SFC McCoy is correct, the 12T3O positions are gone.
I take pride in my profession, reclassing is not an option in my book.
Tough moment for the MOS. Survival of the fittest.

We are 363% overstrength. Im not sure how does it look based on rank, but that is the overall strength for the entire MOS. The highest of all engineer mos. Ask branch to look into your situation. You should have come to Korea. This would have been the perfect job.

If you are not able to get into an MTOE position you will need to start looking for other career paths. SGL at WLC, ALC will work. Also look for TDA slots as well. There are some non MOS jobs there as well. All I can say is good luck and be prepared for changes in our's and your future. Get educated.

Everyone saying no it won’t has seemed to forgotten about the new promotion system. As a SSG, you will not be qualified for 7 if you are filling a 5 slot. Your NCOER will reflect this and the board won’t consider you for 7 because of the merit based promotion system.

I have knowledge of position in Fort Worth, TX for a tacair pilot (Navy). This is a 1099 spot with potential to be picked up for NGC as a W2. $50 an hour. Please drop me a note if interested.
