From 4-6 June 1942 the Pacific Fleet fought the Japanese and turned the tide of war in the Pacific. I'm most touched by the dedication of Torpedo Squadron 8. There was one survivor but their gallant but suicidal attack brought the Japanese air cover to low level allowing the dive bombers to inflict heavy damage on the enemy.

Our ship pulled in there on New Year's Eve, 1967. The enlisted men's club was smaller than the teen club at Tachikawa AFB. Due to the humidity, pretzels and chips came in metal cans like Planter's Peanuts. SOP wass to buy a can and dump it on the table. Then you would have the bartender add a shot of all the well liquor and top it off with beer or wine in order to have chug-a-lug contests. When our crew left at closing there was not a single piece of furniture intact. We were sure that repercussions would ensue, but none did. So at liberty call on New Year's Day we went bacck - the first round was on the house. Seems that they hadn't so much fun in years. Apart from that, the biggest nuisance was dodging the gooney birds everywhere you stepped outside.
