Definitely To End all Wars. Screenplay by Brian Godawa, starring Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer's bearing is perfect. The ethical decisions are perfect. Loved it.

I've always been partial to "The Green Berets" which is one of the greatest military comedies ever made (ask anyone in Special Forces).

SSG Ethan Harris
While in Iraq, I was in a small unit of eight. One person brought in was USAID and retired SF. Turns out he was COL Bill Olds (played the Vietnamese General in this movie).
As I did the left-seat/right-seat, I handed my duties off to SSG Baron Sadler (the son of SSG Barry Sadler, who wrote the song Ballad of the Green Berets). I'll never forget COL Olds' expression when he looked down and saw the nametag on SSG Sadler's uniform. He said, "Are you his son?" It got real quiet in the room and Sadler said, "Yes, sir."
Their expressions still give me chills.

Not really down-rated (some consider it to be one of the finest motion pictures ever made) but largely unknown:
Grand Illusion (Renoir, 1937).
Now out in a completely restored version (the original negative, thought to have been destroyed by an Allied bombing run, had been shipped from Paris to the Reichsfilmarchiv vaults in Berlin when Paris was being sacked Then it went to the State Film Archive in Moscow after the Soviets did their thing in their sector of Berlin, eventually returned to France.)

Great contribution! Now I have one to search for. Thanks brother. Sadly, I've never heard of it.

I can't quite recall how I happened on it, but it has haunted me since then and eventually I managed to obtain a home video copy of it, or two.
A pair of French officers in WWI are taken POW. The story of what happens before, during and after their escape has always held my attention. The interaction of the characters Von Rauffenstein and Boeldieu is thought-provoking.
In some cases it is helpful if you understand some French, German and Russian, as the subtitles are not always complete.

Well, that's embarrassing. I managed to post the above screed twice. I guess I am both devoted to the movie and enormously forgetful.
