What was your most favorite unit you have been assigned too, and would you like to go back to it if it was possible?
This also applies to veterans as well.

I stayed there 9 years thats how much I liked it. Either you hate us or love us, RAKKASANS are one of maybe three units known throughout the Army just by reputation. The others being RANGER RGT and CURRAHEEs.

Anyone not familiar with USAFSS and their important mission during the cold war, here's a little info.

Thank you for your service, SGT
The United States Air Force Security Service (often abbreviated USAFSS) was essentially the United States Air Force's cryptographic intelligence branch; its motto was Freedom through Vigilance. It was...

A site that would be of interest to all who served in USAFSS, United States Air Force Security Service, during the Cold-War years. This is an all-inclusive site.

Two of my best friends were there at that time. One died just last year from ALS and I am not particularly fond of the ice thing but I do understand it and it does bring the story of ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease) to light. I won NCO of the Quarter there as an Observer.
Second would be Ramstein, AB, Germany where I turned into a decent forecaster and that passion continues now.
My trip to Rhein Mein AB, Germany was another favorite but that was TDY and before I went into weather. I loved everything about the place, including the old barracks (WWII). Worked with civilians that were from Iran originally. Nice people....

11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (74-77 & 79-82), I've served in some damn good units thru out my career, however the the one that tops them all was 1st Squadron, 11th ACR, Fulda Germany! Promoted to CPL, SGT, SSG there during my two tours with the Regiment. I learned to Soldier (we were Troopers) there and I learned the leadership skills as a young NCO that carried me to the end of my career. I believe the one thing that stands out the most is this. It didn't matter what your MOS was (Scout, Tanker, Cook, Mechanic, Clerk, Medic) if you assigned to the Regiment, you were a CAV Troop. We knew that one was not worth a damn without the support of the others at some point in time. This tradition was not exclusive to the 11th ACR, but all CAV Units (2nd and 3rd ACR) as well.
We believed our mission guarding the Border between East and West Germany was the most important mission in the Army. We spent the majority of our time in the field and away from home (Border Duty, FTX, Annual and Off-season gunnery, ARTEPs, REFORGER, etc). The more we got, the more we wanted...Afterwards and in-between we played as hard as we trained!
After departing and moving on to other infamous units in the XVIII Abn Corps, I found they were also damn good units, great Soldiers, NCOs and Leaders, however, no where was like it was in the CAV.
I am an Active Life Member of the 11th ACR Association and attend annual Reunions every opportunity, including the 2000 and 2005 Reuions in Fulda, GE. At this time a planned "Last Patrol Gathering" will take place in Fulda in 2015 in April. I'll be there!
Great Topic!
