We just got a new Corporal who recently reclassed to mortars. He’s highly motivated (hooah), and during a training event, we had a disagreement over how to perform large deflections. He told me to "drop," but the fire mission he was calling would’ve put us outside the safety fan during a live fire and could have potentially caused injuries to other elements participating in the exercise.

Now, I understand and respect his rank, but I’ve been a mortarman longer and currently serve as the Gun 2 gunner. The fact is—he was wrong. He just became an 11C, and when he wouldn’t listen to correction or reason, I told him (admittedly out of frustration) to eat a bag of d***s.

I’m curious to hear what others think—especially when it comes to situations where rank clashes with experience and safety is on the line.

This is one of the reasons I left after 10 years in. EM's with bad attitudes! If you can't obey orders,we're in a quandary that is not sop. Wait until you get promoted and you'll find it worse than your corporal!

I am grateful I served before the return of the corporal! I really think the Army needs to make a choice Specialist or NCO's one or the other! If you are going to have specialist through E-6 then get rid of Corporals through staff Sgts or vice versa.
Otherwise since a corporal is considered a JR NCO you needed to follow their command. I am sure within someway of military courtesy you could have followed the command in protest telling him basically to F off and not ran afoul of UCMJ. Something like Specialist are masters of the knowledge and corporals are masters of the front kneeling hummer! While else would they be corporals and not MOS related specialist?

Don't know how much things have changed since I left the Army but, in my day Corporals were NCO's and if you had said that to me it would have been Article 15 time for your insubordinate ass!

Guess the first thing to say is, there is no team leader position in a mortar plt, its sqd ldr, fdc chief, section sgt, plt sgt, pl for Bn mortars.Just so you know how a mortar plt works. Gun 2 is base gun, and typically has the senior E-5 sqd ldr, you as 2 gun gunner does not really matter. Nco is an Nco you should have found a more tactful way to approach the situation. Now on a personal note I can say I have had the urge to say the exact same thing on more then one occasion.
