An old friend of mine randomly posted a photo of himself in OCP’s with LTC rank. He told everyone that he just joined the Army Rerserves. I asked him what unit, and he told me it’s the 101st Airborne. He has a BS in nursing. He’s 45 years old. He’s not on ako or on enterprise. My question is, does this story smell fishy?

Yeah that's sounds like BS. You only loose AKO after you retire which sucks but anyway.

AKO used to be required.

That's true with the exception of retired on authorized contracts that require the contractor to have AKO access.

His story is most likely BS
However the medical core esp in the reserves is not like anything else in the army
I know of people in the medical field that have come in as LTC and a few months later promoted to COL— without even having completed OBC. If the army needs your select skill many things not normally done are done.
But it does smell slightly fishy

It only smells fishy if you’re not the one on the gurney looking up at a neuro or cardiothoracic surgeon who’s going to keep you from dying instead of an 0-3 who’s just finished his second yr of residency & knows he’s in trouble (& so are you) if he doesn’t get the older guy who barely knows how to put on a uniform, but DOES know how to fix you. What you want is excellently trained & capable medical professionals who may be a bit short on hooah, but long on experience & ability.

101st is not the reserves, but if he is serving here at Ft. Campbell or not it would be easy to check

The bit about being in the 101st Abn bothers me a lot. It is not a Reserve Unit, but that is not the worst part. Reservists often do stints of active duty. Does he live anywhere near Ft. Campbell, KY? Say within about 20 miles, max? If so, he gets the benefit of a doubt. If not, don't believe him.

Bet he fake, but IMAs are in AD units wear patch and have a slot. Depending on how valuable, they can go through life 179 days at a time. Asthe saying goes.

At face value it does appear suspicious. However, the army takes professional medical people in at a rank that that equals their skills and experience. Just wait a while, it will come out if he is a poser.

Ms Woodington, the Reserves & Nat’l Guard are the folks that the active duty call on when they are unable to do the job without additional help. As to the medical side of the USAR, that’s where 75% of the medical assets of the ENTIRE Army are located. So basically, when plans go awry, & people who knew what they were talking about (Gen Shinseki) are ignored by their (inferior) superiors,(Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld! Wolfowitz), the “reserves” come along (now for 18 years) & save countless thousands of lives. That’s what we’ve done & are still doing. You’re welcome.
