As a reservist, not unless you're at an Airborne unit. If you were to go active then it's easy to get to Airborne school

There are recruiters that come to your basic training cycle asking for volunteers from time to time (at least while I was in). It wouldn't hurt to speak to them.

PV2 (Join to see) What branch did you enlist in? I went in on the delayed entry program because I wanted to wait on the birth of my daughter. You haven't shipped to basic/boot camp yet, so you might be able to get your contract modified. I wasn't a recruiter or career counselor, so I can't speak with 100% certainty. I can only say what I've seen in OSUT (basic and AIT all at once at the same duty station) and I served 7 years active as a paratrooper with the 82d. If you get slotted in an Airborne unit you will be offered the school almost guaranteed. If I were you I'd speak to the recruiter. What MOS are you going for?

I enlisted in the army reserves as a 91b wheeled vehicle mechanic, I signed an 8 year reserve contract but my recruiter and I have planned to start an active contract half way through my reserve contract because I want to go active when I am eligible

I’m also being put in an army unit on Fairchild Air Force base so maybe that will influence their willingness to allow me to go airborne

PV2 (Join to see) As far as I remember you can't get Airborne in your contract as Reserves, only Active and NG. I believe it's the same for the recruiters that come to basic/AIT to ask for volunteers. It might be in your best interest to sign an Active contract if you want Airborne. Like I said, speak to a recruiter.

Can I go to Airborne School even if it’s not in my contract?

Airborne can be difficult if there isn't a reason to go. Either on orders for an Airborne unit or reclassing to an Airborne mandatory MOS, which is the easiest way to get it. In regards to requesting the school and hoping your unit sends you, good luck with that. Units don't want to send soldiers to Airborne because they know they will lose the SM to a PCS. Mechanized units will laugh in your face at the mention of Airborne.

Get familiar with the form DA 4187. Haha! I’m sure you’ll get the opportunity to go as long as you prove you’re high speed.

Yes. You can always volunteer. But it is not guaranteed. Just get to your duty station, put in the paperwork and keep putting in the paperwork. JUst make sure that you are ready for the school when the orders finally come down. Slackers need not apply.
